Tweets from Congressman Dennis Ross and Possible Implications for Postal Unions

In the last few days, Representative Dennis Ross has made a number of tweets regarding the conflict between the Governor and the teachers unions in Wisconsin.   While none of the tweets mention postal issues, they may provide a hint to stakeholders and policymakers  regarding the tone on labor issues that the House will take when discussing changes required to return the Postal Service to solvency.

RepDennisRoss Dennis Ross
Hypocrisy & big labor are synonymous. RT @Reaganista: RT @JebBush: Must see video. Stay strong @GovWalker. http://bit.ly/dPHMH5 #wiunion

RepDennisRoss Dennis Ross
Working on that. RT @michellemalkin: Unions get waivers from Obamacare. Why can't workers get waivers from forced unionism? #wiunion

RepDennisRoss Dennis Ross
@crbones private sector unions were needed in the 20s and 30s. They are even helpful in some ways today. Public sector unions must go.

RepDennisRoss Dennis Ross
I wonder how many of the 10% unemployed in America would like a job as a teacher in Wisconsin? Time for an air traffic controller solution.

Representative Ross's tweets suggest that postal labor may find that the best they may expect from postal reform legislation could be the changes in the criteria arbitrators must use that are contained in bills proposed by Senators Tom Carper and Susan Collins.

For all you anti union nay Sayers because of anti union people the U. S now has less then 10% union work force. So don't blame the economy on unions but look where the lack of unions have got the U. S work force! The companies have used and abused the workers to the breaking point and it will only get worse. How many people do you k ow that earn 12.00 or less? Tryi living on that! Mean while these CEO's are making millions while forcing these non union workers to the breaking point all for a few dollars.

Since the politicians are so gung ho about unions giving back wages and benefits, how about the elected officials also giving back?I think in a show of good faith and to set an example to the American people that it would not be unreasonable if they(Senators,Congressman,House Reps, etc.)give back just 5% of their current salaries and also contribute 10% to their health benefits. This would save the taxpayers money which could be used to say, pay down the debt. It isn't much money but when everyone else is being asked to give back why should the politicians be exempt? Just a thought!

Union Busting is anti-American. We are a Union of States. The only way we can be defeated is from within and it appears as though the Wisconsin Governor is starting the fire to burn down our United States. Vote Out all Anti-Union politicians. When they invoke Reagan's name, as the basis for the republican stance against unions, do your homework. Ronald Reagan was a Union President for over 7 years! The republican party should not be anti-union. He was against the air traffic controllers becoming a danger to public safety through their strike. Homework is essential.

It never ceases to amaze me how absolutely ignorant these grand-standing rookie elected officials are on the nature of postal service funding. Yes, public sector unions do receive tax payer supportd benefits, but not so in the postal service. Its wages and benefits are based on payment for services rendered. If any bailout is needed by USPS, it can come from the 50 to 75 billion in overpayments to OPM for healthcare benefits. But nobody is talking about that because Ross and his ilk have already stolen that money.

The Great Depression that started in the 30's was preceeded by many years of republican President's and Union membership was at it lowest.Roosevelt became President. Jobs increased. Union membership increased, and bye bye depression!Maybe if the republicans would let Obama try one of his ideas to create jobs, it would work.I think anyone who is against Unionism and what it stands for is a communist.

Union or non-Union, government employment in it's current state is unsustainable. The States are broke. Illegal immigration has contributed to this. Who supports illegal immigration? Government and Government employees whose job it is to redistribute money to them supports it. The Union's, government and non-government support illegal immigration.

We are in a fiscal death spiral as a nation. The government, which I work for, needs to be cut at least 30% across the board at all levels, federal, state and local.

All government pensions should be handled by the employees through a regular IRA, put your own tax deferred money into it, create your own future. Starting with the President down to local government, pay your own way.

The government and it's employees should have no advantage over their private sector benefactors who are being layed off. No tenure or guaranteed jobs. They should be able to be fired like in the real world.

Close down all the military bases around the world and put a portion of them to protect our borders and the rest go into the regular job market. The military blows as much money as anyone in government and isn't a sacred cow.

Anyone on government benefits should be required to provide proof of their legal status before getting or staying on benefits.

We are broke.

For those of you who say the unions should be dissolved----you must be REPUBLICANS!!!! Otherwise you would not feel that way.

You tea party voters got what you asked for. Republicans that won't support higher taxes on the rich and instead want the middle class union workers to give back a pay cut.

I agree with anonymous.

The country is in a financial mess. I would suggest immediately bringing home ALL the troops from around the world; cut off ALL foreign aid except for EXTREME EMERGENCY aid; cut ALL federal entitlements 5% (to include active duty military, fed employees, fed elected officials); and require any employee in US to speak fluent English.

Bush wars have bankrupted the country. We have no money.Where were all these congressmen when this was going on. Stop all foreign aid and get out of Iraq and Afganestan. Congressmen should set example by taking a 50% cut in pay.

The United States is not "broke." We are in debt. Being in debt is not the same as being broke. We are in debt for very identifiable reasons, all of which are easily remedied with a little political will. The deficit is not due to federal or postal salaries and benefits and reducing them won't make a bit of difference. Please do not fall for that tired Republican political mantra.

The Medicare prescription give-away to the pharmaceutical industry, two wars, TARP, and the billionaire bailout (Bush tax "cuts")and its extension are the primary causes of the budget deficit. Sufficient revenue is not being generated due to the lack of jobs, lower wages, redistribution of wealth to the top 1%, and again, the continuing billionaire bailout.

By the way, the Bush administration keep the costs of the wars and the Medicare prescription give-away (no negotiations with pharmaceuticals)off the books in order to hide the costs. The Obama administration put it back on the books, so it looks like a spending explosion.

Government spending is almost a third of the US economy. To drastically cut it now is not a good idea. Expected cuts in spending are already putting stress on the economy, and it won't do anything to address the deficit problem in any significant way. If the US just stopped all domestic spending; closed all courts, all federal enforcement, all social safety nets, we would not see any significant reduction of the deficit.

Remember the 1994 mid-terms? The Republicans played the same budget scare game and we fell for it then too.

Less spending results in a weaker economy. Lower wages results in less spending. Less spending hurts the economy. A hurt economy increases the federal debt. This is reality, no matter what kind of political theater comes out of congress.
